Took the machine home, where there is only one wireless network.

with the instructions:

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    In Section "Device", change driver from "ati" to "r128".

    In Section "Monitor", add
        HorizSync 30-60
        VertRefresh 60-90

    In Section "Screen", change DefaultDepth from 24 to 16

This seems to work nicely.
